Dave Lander has worked in the natural gas business for over 40 years, having joined the then nationalised British Gas Corporation in 1974. Much of this time has been in a Research and Development environment, initially with British Gas’ Research and Development Division and later with BG Technology (renamed Advantica, then GL - Noble Denton, and now part of the DNV-GL group) as the UK gas industry underwent privatisation in the 1980s.

Initial interests included research and development into processes for substitute natural gas production and were followed later by processes for conversion of natural gases to other products. In the 1990s he became responsible for all natural gas quality related projects conducted in Advantica. Major clients during this period include National Grid Transco (now National Grid), the leading gas transporter in the UK and various oil and gas producers, gas transporters, gas traders and gas consumers based in the UK, US, Europe and the Far East, including BP, Shell, GDF Suez and CLP Power.

In 2003 he moved to National Grid Transco (now National Grid) to provide Gas Quality expertise within the company and develop policy and standards in the gas quality area for implementation throughout the company. He also represented National Grid and the UK at Marcogaz Expert Working Groups in Gas Quality, Energy Measurement and Biomethane.

In 2008, he left National Grid in order to pursue a career as an independent consultant in natural gas quality and energy measurement. As a consultant he advises a wide range of companies both in the UK and internationally on natural gas quality and also on biogas and biomethane.

He is an active participant in BSI/ISO standards committees on Natural Gas and Gas Analysis and is a UK representative on CEN Working Groups currently developing European standards for natural gas quality and biomethane for grid injection. Dave is a Chartered Chemist and a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry
